ORTHOPEDY AND SPORT INJURY
ORTHOPEDICS AND SPORT INJURY
The Orthopedics and Traumatology applies the most appropriate medical and surgical treatment to the patients by examining the congenital and acquired diseases in the musculoskeletal system in solidarity and collaboration with all departments in our hospital, using the broad possibilities of technology, and planning the most appropriate medical and surgical treatment. The patients are informed in full detail by our specialist doctors regarding the treatment plans. Orthopedics and Traumatology is one of the fastest developing, changing and even increasing scope in the light of technology and scientific advances.
Sub Branches:
- Arthroplasty surgery (joint prostheses)
- Sports traumatology
- Lengthening and leg inequalities
- Child orthopedics and traumatology
- Hand surgery and microsurgery
- Knee surgery and arthroscopic surgery
- Shoulder and elbow surgery
- Orthopedic oncology
- Foot and ankle surgery
- Bone Inflammation (Osteomyelitis) treatment
Arthroscopic surgery
Arthroscopy is a method that enables the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries occurring within the joint by visual inspection of the joints using fiberoptic devices. Arthroscopy is done with a few minor skin incisions and causes a very small scar and pain, but a rapid recovery is observed compared to open surgery. The operation takes approximately 1 hour and the patient is discharged a few hours after the operation. The patient can step on his foot after the operation and drive the car 3 days later. It does not need to be removed as the stitch is thrown with fusible material. In a wide range from professional athletes to housewives; Knee-shoulder-hand and ankle arthroscopy, ligament-cartilage-meniscus-tendon operations, cartilage transplants are successfully performed using modern surgical techniques.
Sports Traumatology
Sports is an activity that increases the organic resistance of the body, improves the physiological capacity of the systems, maintains and maintains this capacity. However, not getting enough preparation before starting sports brings injuries. Among the areas exposed to sportive trauma, the knee joint takes the first place with 32.9%. Most injuries during sports after knee joint; ankle, hip and groin area, shoulder joint, thigh region, spine elbow joint, wrist and hand. Emergency diagnosis and treatment of all sports injuries are carried out in the Department of Sports Traumatology.
Lengthening and Leg Inequalities
Functional disorders caused by crooked legs, inequality between the legs, short stature are orthopedic problems that can be treated with the Ilizarov method today. Thanks to this method, which has been applied successfully in Memorial Health Group Orthopedics and Traumatology Departments, the length difference in the legs; shortness compensation can be equalized by shortening the long leg and lengthening the short leg. Ilizarav method is also successfully applied in the treatment of soft tissue loss, curvatures and shortness caused by non-union in bone fractures.
What is the Ilizarov Method?
It is a system that can give controlled movement to the bone parts with the help of hinges and rods, where the bones are fixed with thin wires and hoops. Surgical interventions can be applied to children or adults with arm and leg inequality developing after congenital diseases, bone loss and traumas (such as early closure of growth cartilage). In this process, a low-energy fracture in the bone is created and gradually extended (1 mm / day). In the extension region, extension of 80% of the original length of the bone can be achieved. In parallel with the developing implant technology in appropriate cases, the use of new techniques and technology alternative to the ilizarov technique is also carried out.
The “distraction osteogenesis” defined by Ilizarov, one of the revolutions of orthopedic science in the 20th century, that is, the new bone formation technique by stretching the tissue that helps repair between the broken bone ends, and the extension that emerged with this concept, the reconstruction of bone cavities, the main solution methods used in non-union therapy today. With the tool called Ilizarov external fixator, acute shortening and lengthening from the other area in the same bone are made from the non-union area, which is performed together with new bone formation applications by stretching the auxiliary tissue applied to the repair. With the Ilizarov method, boiling is carried out without restricting the daily activities of the patient, preserving joint functions, and the curvature is corrected and the length is provided again. Thanks to this technique, other structural and functional disorders that can cause disability in the patient, such as closing bone cavities and infection, are also compensated for, and shortness is also compensated.
Today, patient comfort comes to the fore in the treatment of non-union.
Short treatment time is very important for patient comfort in the treatment of bones that are difficult to boil. By using the combined techniques developed for this purpose, both the advantages of the external device are utilized, and the time of the device connected to the bone attached to the bone outside the body, called the “external fixator”, is shortened on average. Combined methods are used in orthopedic surgery today in lengthening the bones connected with hip and shin bones. In shortness after trauma, lengthening can be done over the intramedullary nail. Concomitant use of intramedullary nail and external fixator also shortens the recovery time, increasing patient comfort. This combination has been successfully used in the boiling treatment of shortness, bone voids and bone fractures.
Which Diseases are Used in the Ilizarov Method?
- Closed and open fractures,
- Non-boiling fractures
- Bone lengthening treatment (lengthening, polio sequelae, post-traumatic, post-infection growth shortenings due to early closure of the cartilage and leg length inequalities),
- Correction of arm and leg curvatures,
- Bone losses (usually occur after tumor, trauma or infection),
- In the treatment of untreated developmental hip dislocation,
- In foot diseases,
- Bone infections,
- Joint movement restrictions,
- In metabolic diseases,
- Bone structural disorders
Pediatric Orthopedics and Traumatology
Pediatric’s Memorial Health Group Orthopedics and Traumatology Department, is one of the rare centers in Turkey. Children under the age of 16; The follow-up and treatment of walking disorders, foot problems, congenital deformities, shortness, developmental hip dysplasia and spinal disorders are performed by our experienced orthopedists.
Hand surgery and microsurgery
Thanks to the microsurgical technique, vessels and nerves smaller than 1mm in diameter can be operated using needles and threads that are hard to see with the naked eye. So; Organs such as broken hands, arms, feet, legs can be replaced and repair of very thin nerve fibers can make the attached limb feel and move again. The best evaluation of your problems such as acute soft tissue trauma (vascular, tendon and nerve cuts, skin and muscle tissue losses and amputations caused by crushing and compression), hand and wrist pain, trigger finger, nerve compression, tennis elbow, ganglion cysts, diagnosis and treatment is done.
Knee Surgery And Arthroscopic Surgery
The knees are exposed to the highest load compared to other joints. Failure to prepare before starting sports and excessively straining the knees during sports lead to damage to cartilage tissue, tearing in the menus, rupture of the ligaments and impair knee health. Injuries of structures such as meniscus, anterior cruciate ligament, articular cartilage, capsule in the knee joint, intra-articular inflammation called septic arthritis, synovitis, namely thickening of the articular membrane, moderate knee joint calcification, intraarticular fractures are treated with arthroscopic surgery.
Trauma
Fast and good results in very common injuries are possible only with modern and effective treatment methods. To mention these briefly;
Functional fixation technique: In cases that do not require surgery, instead of classical hard and long plastering; It is a new plastering technique that allows shorter, semi-rigid, early loading and muscle function. The plaster used here; Itching does not cause allergies, it also allows the opportunity to easily enter the bathroom or even the pool.
Bone stimulants: Bone healing time is shortened by half with ultrasonic wave, especially in stress fractures and small bone fractures.
Closed intramedullary nailing techniques: These are the techniques applied in most of the fractures of the long bones (simple-piece) and hip fractures of the legs and arms, without opening the fracture line, by 2-3 cm incisions and shortening the healing time.
Minor intervention operations with arthroscopic aid: In some of the intra-articular fractures, which enables the detection of fractures without opening the joint; In this way, techniques that reduce the likelihood of joint stiffness that may occur after surgery, and shorten the time to reach physical function and full function.
Prosthetic surgery: These are applications that give elderly people the chance to apply to more than hip and shoulder fractures, and provide the opportunity to walk the next day of surgery with new prosthetic designs.
Radical major surgeries: Developing fixation materials and surgical techniques; Successful results have been achieved in cases where the treatment opportunity was limited in the past, such as large pelvis fractures, fragmented fractures in large joints.
